The Technology Development Board (TDB) has funded a Hyderabad-based firm to commercialize IIT Guwahati’s indigenous technology for extracting C-phycocyanin from Spirulina, aiming to reduce import dependency in the nutraceutical and food sectors.
The Technology Development Board (TDB), under the Department of Science and Technology (DST), has taken a significant step toward strengthening India’s self-reliance in biotechnology by providing financial assistance to a Hyderabad-based enterprise. The funding is earmarked for the commercialization of an indigenous technology developed by IIT Guwahati for the production of C-phycocyanin, a high-value natural pigment derived from the blue-green algae, Spirulina.
C-phycocyanin is widely utilized across the food, agriculture, and nutraceutical industries due to its potent antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and neuroprotective properties. Currently, the Indian market relies heavily on imports to meet the growing demand for this natural colorant and bioactive compound. By scaling up indigenous production, this initiative aims to bridge the supply-demand gap, reduce foreign exchange outflows, and provide a cost-effective alternative to imported pigments.
