Decolonizing Cartography: UN Resolution on Equitable Map Projections

The United Nations General Assembly has recently adopted a landmark resolution encouraging the global adoption of equal-area map projections. This initiative seeks to rectify long-standing cartographic distortions inherent in traditional maps, such as the Mercator projection, which have historically exaggerated the size of landmasses in the Global North while diminishing those in the Global South. By promoting more accurate representations of geographical scale, the UN aims to foster 'cognitive justice'—a framework that challenges the Eurocentric biases embedded in global visual narratives. India’s support for this resolution aligns with its broader foreign policy objective of championing the interests of the Global South. For decades, cartographic representation has been more than a technical exercise; it has been a tool of geopolitical influence, shaping perceptions of power, development, and regional significance.
