Deepening Sino-Russian Naval Cooperation: Implications for Regional Security

China and Russia have officially launched their annual joint naval drills in the Yellow Sea, scheduled to run from July 6 to July 13, 2026. These exercises, which have become a recurring feature of the bilateral defense partnership, serve as a clear demonstration of the deepening strategic coordination between Moscow and Beijing. As the global geopolitical order undergoes a transition toward multipolarity, the interoperability displayed by the two navies highlights a shared intent to challenge the status quo in maritime domains. For India, this development is of critical strategic concern. The growing synergy between China and Russia, particularly in the maritime sphere, complicates India’s security calculus. While India maintains a 'Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership' with Russia, the latter’s increasing reliance on China—driven by Western sanctions and geopolitical isolation—creates a complex balancing act for New Delhi.
