Digitalizing Justice: India's Criminal Justice System Set for Full Digital Roll-out by 2027

GS2

India is transitioning to a fully digital criminal justice system by January 1, 2027, under the new criminal laws (BNS, BNSS, BSA). The Interoperable Criminal Justice System (ICJS) will integrate key pillars like police, courts, and forensics on the government-owned MeghRaj cloud platform to enhance transparency and efficiency.

In a major leap toward modernizing India's legal framework, the Union Government is steering a comprehensive digital transformation of the criminal justice system, targeting a full roll-out by January 1, 2027. Under this mandate, all procedures related to investigations, trials, and forensics under the new criminal laws—the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam (BSA)—will be recorded and processed digitally. At the core of this digital push is the Interoperable Criminal Justice System (ICJS) platform. The ICJS aims to seamlessly integrate the five pillars of the criminal justice system: police (via the Crime and Criminal Tracking Network & Systems), e-Courts, e-Prisons, e-Forensics, and e-Prosecution. By enabling real-time data sharing and eliminating the need for physical file transfers, the platform is expected to drastically reduce delays in investigations and trials. To ensure data security and sovereignty, all information will be hosted on 'MeghRaj', the government-owned cloud platform.
