The Election Commission of India (ECI) has significantly upgraded its technological arsenal by deploying 'Vigilance 2.0', an Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based system designed to combat the rising menace of deepfakes and coordinated misinformation campaigns. As electoral processes become increasingly digital, the potential for synthetic media to influence voter behavior and tarnish candidate reputations has emerged as a critical challenge to the mandate of free and fair elections. Vigilance 2.0 functions as a real-time monitoring layer across various social media platforms and digital communication channels. By utilizing advanced machine learning algorithms, the tool can identify patterns indicative of AI-generated content, such as lip-sync inconsistencies or unnatural facial movements, which are characteristic of deepfakes. Once flagged, the system enables the ECI to take swift action, including the issuance of takedown notices to platforms and public clarifications to prevent the viral spread of falsehoods.
