Ecological Significance of Striped Hyenas: Addressing Cultural Stigma and Conservation Challenges

The striped hyena (Hyaena hyaena), often relegated to the periphery of conservation discourse, serves as a critical component of India’s ecological landscape. As a specialized scavenger, the species plays an indispensable role in maintaining ecosystem health by disposing of carrion, thereby curbing the spread of zoonotic diseases and preventing the accumulation of organic waste in the wild. Despite their functional importance, these animals are frequently misunderstood, often viewed through a lens of cultural superstition and fear, which exacerbates human-wildlife conflict and leads to retaliatory killings. From a conservation perspective, the striped hyena faces a dual challenge: habitat fragmentation and negative public perception. Unlike charismatic megafauna that receive significant state-led protection, the hyena is often overlooked in policy frameworks.
