India and Seychelles have signed key MoUs spanning space cooperation, UPI integration, agriculture, and shipping during PM Modi's state visit. Backed by a new INR 1,250 crore Line of Credit and Seychelles joining the CDRI, this partnership reinforces India's SAGAR vision and deepens maritime security in the Indian Ocean Region.
During Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s state visit to Seychelles, India and Seychelles signed several landmark Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) to deepen bilateral cooperation. The agreements span critical sectors including Space technology, digital financial systems (UPI), Agriculture, Shipping, and Capacity Building. To support Seychelles' development priorities, India announced a Line of Credit (LoC) of INR 1,250 crores. Additionally, Seychelles officially joined the India-led Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure (CDRI), highlighting a shared commitment to climate resilience.
Key Pillars of the Agreements:
1. Digital and Space Frontiers: The integration of India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) in Seychelles will boost tourism and ease cross-border financial transactions. Cooperation in Space technology will enable Seychelles to leverage India's space capabilities for environmental monitoring and resource management.
2. Maritime and Infrastructure Support: The INR 1,250 crore Line of Credit will fund key infrastructure projects, aligning with India's "SAGAR" (Security and Growth for All in the Region) initiative. Collaboration in shipping will enhance maritime connectivity and security in the Western Indian Ocean.
3. Climate Resilience: By joining the CDRI, Seychelles—a Small Island Developing State (SIDS) highly vulnerable to climate change—gains access to global expertise and support to build disaster-resilient infrastructure.
