The shift toward salt caverns represents a strategic evolution in how the country manages its natural resources and energy buffers. Strategic Petroleum Reserves are large stockpiles of crude oil maintained by countries to release during supply disruptions, such as geopolitical tensions or natural disasters. Given that India imports nearly 85% of its crude oil requirements, these reserves are vital for national sovereignty and economic stability. The Indian Strategic Petroleum Reserves Limited (ISPRL) is now focusing on the salt deposits in the Bikaner-Nagaur basin of Rajasthan for Phase II of the SPR programme.
