A recent MoSPI report reveals that 449 major infrastructure projects in India are facing cost overruns exceeding ₹5.01 lakh crore. The report identifies land acquisition and administrative delays as critical bottlenecks, emphasizing the need for systemic reforms in project management.
The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) has highlighted a significant fiscal and administrative challenge in India's infrastructure sector. According to its latest flash report, out of 1,838 monitored projects (each with an investment of ₹150 crore or more), 449 have reported cost overruns, while 779 have faced substantial time delays. The cumulative cost escalation has reached a staggering ₹5.01 lakh crore, representing an 18.13% increase over the original sanctioned costs.
The report identifies a complex web of external and internal factors responsible for these setbacks. Primary among the external hurdles are land acquisition delays, difficulties in obtaining forest and environmental clearances, and localized law and order issues. Internally, administrative inefficiencies—such as delays in finalizing detailed engineering, frequent changes in project scope, and slow tendering processes—contribute significantly to the inertia. Furthermore, the lack of seamless inter-ministerial coordination often leads to 'infrastructure support' gaps, where the progress of one project is stalled due to dependencies on another department.
