International Day for Biological Diversity 2024: Strengthening the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework

The International Day for Biological Diversity, observed annually on May 22, serves as a critical reminder of the urgent need to protect the planet's biological wealth. The 2024 theme, "Be Part of the Plan," is a direct call to action for governments, indigenous communities, NGOs, and individuals to support the implementation of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KMGBF). Adopted in December 2022 at COP15, the KMGBF is often referred to as the "Paris Agreement for Nature." It sets out four overarching goals for 2050 and 23 targets for 2030. Key among these is the "30x30" target, which aims to protect 30% of the world’s land and oceans by 2030. The framework emphasizes not just conservation, but also the sustainable use of biodiversity and the fair and equitable sharing of benefits arising from genetic resources.
