Maritime Security Concerns: Attack on Merchant Vessel GFS Galaxy

The recent attack on the commercial vessel GFS Galaxy off the coast of Oman has once again brought the issue of maritime security in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR) to the forefront of India’s foreign policy and security discourse. With 10 out of 11 Indian nationals on board successfully rescued, the incident underscores the vulnerability of merchant shipping to non-state actors and regional geopolitical tensions. For India, the safety of its seafarers is a critical priority, given that a significant portion of the global maritime workforce consists of Indian nationals. Furthermore, the IOR serves as a vital artery for India’s energy security and trade. Attacks on commercial vessels in these waters not only threaten the lives of crew members but also disrupt supply chains, increase insurance premiums, and necessitate a more robust naval presence to ensure the freedom of navigation.
