Modernizing Foodgrain Preservation: ICAR-FCI Collaboration for Sustainable Storage Solutions

GS3

The ICAR and FCI have partnered to develop eco-friendly fumigation technologies, aiming to mitigate pest resistance and environmental hazards associated with traditional chemical storage methods.

The Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) and the Food Corporation of India (FCI) have entered into a strategic Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to revolutionize foodgrain storage infrastructure in India. This partnership marks a critical shift from conventional, chemical-heavy fumigation practices toward sustainable, eco-friendly alternatives. For decades, the storage of buffer stocks has relied heavily on chemical fumigants like aluminium phosphide. While effective in the short term, these substances have increasingly led to the development of pest resistance, rendering traditional pest control measures less effective over time. Furthermore, the ecological footprint of these chemicals poses significant risks to both the environment and the health of personnel managing these facilities. By leveraging ICAR’s scientific expertise, the FCI aims to integrate advanced, non-toxic, or low-impact fumigation technologies into its vast network of warehouses and silos.
