National Panchayati Raj Day 2026: Digital Transformation and Fiscal Devolution in Rural Governance

On the occasion of National Panchayati Raj Day 2026, the Government of India reaffirmed its commitment to 'Gram Swaraj' by integrating cutting-edge technology with fiscal decentralization. Commemorating the 73rd Constitutional Amendment Act of 1993, the event focused on the theme of digital transformation as a catalyst for rural reconstruction. A cornerstone of this year's announcement is the 16th Finance Commission's recommendation to allocate ₹4.35 lakh crore to Rural Local Bodies (RLBs). This substantial increase in grants-in-aid is designed to address the perennial challenge of the '3Fs'—Functions, Funds, and Functionaries. By providing predictable and enhanced financial resources, the government aims to empower Gram Panchayats to undertake climate-resilient infrastructure projects and improve basic service delivery.
