General N.S. Raja Subramani Assumes Charge as CDS: Focus on Military Theaterisation

General N.S. Raja Subramani has officially assumed charge as India’s Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), marking a significant transition in the country’s military leadership. Succeeding the previous incumbent, General Subramani steps into a role that is central to India’s ongoing defense reforms and the modernization of its armed forces. The office of the CDS, established in late 2019 following recommendations from the Kargil Review Committee and the Shekatkar Committee, serves as the principal military advisor to the Union Defence Minister. The primary objective of this position is to provide 'single-point military advice' and foster greater synergy among the Army, Navy, and Air Force. As the permanent Chairman of the Chiefs of Staff Committee (CoSC), the CDS is also responsible for the Department of Military Affairs (DMA). General Subramani’s tenure is expected to be defined by the implementation of the ambitious military theaterisation plan. Theaterisation involves the creation of Integrated Theatre Commands (ITCs), where units of the three services work under a single operational commander for a specific geographical region. This shift from service-specific commands to unified commands is designed to optimize resource utilization and enhance combat effectiveness in modern, multi-domain warfare.
