PM Modi at 52nd G7 Summit: Championing Resource Mobilization and Green Finance for the Global South

At the 52nd G7 Summit held in Evian, France, Prime Minister Narendra Modi reinforced India’s position as a pivotal bridge between the developed world and the Global South. Participating as an invited partner, the Prime Minister’s address centered on the critical necessity of equitable resource mobilization and the democratization of green finance.

India’s intervention comes at a time when developing nations face a widening financing gap in their pursuit of the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and climate commitments. PM Modi emphasized that the current global financial architecture, largely established in the post-World War II era, requires urgent reform to reflect contemporary economic realities. He argued that without accessible and affordable capital, the Global South’s transition to green energy would remain an aspirational goal rather than a reality.

A significant portion of the discussion was dedicated to 'Green Finance.' India called for the G7 nations to fulfill their long-standing financial commitments and to facilitate the transfer of low-cost technology. The Prime Minister highlighted that resource mobilization should not lead to unsustainable debt burdens for developing economies, advocating instead for innovative financing mechanisms and multilateral development bank (MDB) reforms.

Furthermore, the call for a 'reformed multilateralism' was a recurring theme. By advocating for the Global South, India is positioning itself not just as an emerging economy but as a leader capable of shaping global policy discourse. This involves ensuring that the voices of underrepresented nations are heard in high-level forums like the G7, particularly concerning issues of energy security, digital public infrastructure, and supply chain resilience.
