Revitalizing Soil Health: The 'Khet Bachao Abhiyan' and Sustainable Rabi Strategy

As India prepares for the Rabi cropping cycle, the Union Ministry of Agriculture has unveiled the 'Khet Bachao Abhiyan,' a strategic initiative scheduled to run from October 22 to November 30. This campaign is designed to address the growing concerns regarding soil degradation, which has been exacerbated by the imbalanced use of chemical fertilizers and intensive monoculture practices. By focusing on soil health, the government aims to transition Indian agriculture toward a more sustainable and resilient framework. The initiative is multi-dimensional, emphasizing the necessity of crop diversification to break the cycle of nutrient depletion. A key component of this strategy is the targeted promotion of pulse cultivation, particularly in eastern India. This region, which holds significant potential for agricultural expansion, has historically been underutilized in terms of pulse production. By incentivizing farmers to shift toward pulses, the government not only aims to improve soil nitrogen fixation but also seeks to address the nutritional security of the nation and reduce the import dependency on pulses.
