Supreme Court Mandates Timelines for High Court Judgments: Strengthening the Right to Speedy Justice

In a significant move to address judicial pendency and procedural delays, a Supreme Court Bench led by the Chief Justice of India (CJI) has issued ten mandatory directives to all High Courts. The primary focus of these directives is to ensure that reserved judgments are pronounced within a maximum period of three months and that bail orders are released within 24 hours of the conclusion of arguments. The Supreme Court emphasized that the delay in pronouncing judgments is not merely a procedural lapse but a substantive infringement on the fundamental right to a speedy trial, which is an integral part of Article 21 of the Constitution.
