Strategic Indigenization: DRDO Technology Transfer to Boost Private Defence Manufacturing

In a decisive move to accelerate the 'Aatmanirbharta' (self-reliance) initiative, the Ministry of Defence has approved the transfer of technology (ToT) for all conventional missile systems developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) to the Indian private sector. This policy shift represents a structural transition in India’s defence ecosystem, moving from a state-led research and production model to a collaborative framework that leverages the agility of the private industry and Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs). Historically, the development and production of complex missile systems were largely confined to DRDO laboratories and Defence Public Sector Undertakings (DPSUs). By opening these critical technologies to the domestic industry, the government aims to achieve three primary objectives: reducing import dependency, fostering a robust defence industrial base, and creating a competitive supply chain. The inclusion of MSMEs is particularly significant, as these entities often provide the specialized components and sub-systems necessary for high-end defence manufacturing. This decentralization is expected to reduce lead times, optimize production costs, and enhance the scalability of India’s missile manufacturing capabilities.
