Strengthening Armoured Fleet Readiness: The Strategic Role of Indigenous Tank Overhaul Facilities

The Ministry of Defence has launched a strategic initiative to establish a dedicated overhaul facility for the Indian Army’s T-72 and T-90 main battle tanks at the Vehicle Factory in Jabalpur. With an investment of ₹472 crore, this project is designed to streamline the maintenance cycle of the Army's primary armoured assets, targeting an annual capacity of 80 tanks. This development is a critical component of India’s broader 'Atmanirbhar Bharat' (Self-Reliant India) vision, specifically within the defence manufacturing sector. Historically, the maintenance and overhaul of heavy armoured platforms often relied on original equipment manufacturers or external support, which posed challenges regarding turnaround time and long-term logistical independence. By localizing the overhaul process, the Indian defence ecosystem reduces its dependence on foreign supply chains, ensuring that the operational readiness of the armoured corps remains high even during geopolitical exigencies. The Jabalpur facility will serve as a hub for technical expertise, integrating advanced engineering processes to extend the service life of these tanks, which form the backbone of India's land-based deterrence.
