Strengthening India's Food Safety: FSSAI’s New Compliance and Digital Frameworks

On the occasion of World Food Safety Day, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) unveiled a comprehensive suite of initiatives designed to bolster the nation's food safety ecosystem. Centered on the theme 'Food safety: prepare for the unexpected,' these measures focus on enhancing regulatory compliance, leveraging digital technology, and fostering a culture of food safety across the entire value chain. A primary highlight of the release is the introduction of updated Food Safety Management System (FSMS) manuals. These manuals provide Food Business Operators (FBOs) with clear, sector-specific guidelines to maintain hygiene and safety standards. By standardizing protocols for various segments—from manufacturing to retail—FSSAI aims to reduce the risk of foodborne illnesses and ensure consistency in food quality. Furthermore, the authority launched several digital tools aimed at simplifying the licensing and registration process. This move towards 'e-governance' in food regulation is expected to enhance the 'Ease of Doing Business' by reducing physical touchpoints and increasing transparency in the compliance process.
