This move underscores India’s proactive role in shaping the strategic and economic architecture of the Indian Ocean Region (IOR).
The IPOI, launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the 2019 East Asia Summit, is an open, non-treaty-based global initiative. It focuses on seven key pillars: Maritime Security; Maritime Ecology; Maritime Resources; Capacity Building and Information Sharing; Disaster Risk Reduction and Management; Science, Technology and Academic Cooperation; and Trade, Connectivity and Maritime Transport. By hosting this workshop, India aims to ensure that the 23 member states of IORA find common ground in these areas, fostering a collaborative rather than competitive environment.
