Supreme Court Seeks Centre’s Response on NEET Reforms

The Supreme Court of India has taken a proactive stance on the integrity of the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET), directing the Union government to file a comprehensive response regarding proposed systemic overhauls. This judicial intervention follows a series of petitions highlighting concerns over the transparency, security, and administrative robustness of the current examination framework. The Court’s focus is primarily on the feasibility of transitioning from the traditional pen-and-paper format to a Computer-Based Test (CBT) model. Proponents of this shift argue that a digital-first approach could significantly mitigate risks associated with paper leaks and manual handling of sensitive materials. However, the transition poses logistical challenges, particularly regarding the digital divide and the need for robust infrastructure across diverse geographical regions in India. Furthermore, the Court has emphasized the necessity of establishing a more independent and autonomous regulatory body to oversee the examination process, moving away from the current centralized oversight that has faced criticism for its perceived lack of accountability.
