Tracking Threats from Space: India’s Next Line of Defence

In an era where the nature of warfare is rapidly evolving, India is strategically pivoting toward space-based surveillance to secure its vast and challenging frontiers. The Indian armed forces are increasingly leveraging indigenous space assets to maintain constant, real-time monitoring of border areas. This shift represents a critical evolution in national defence architecture, moving beyond traditional ground-based surveillance to a multi-layered approach that utilizes satellite imagery, signals intelligence, and high-resolution reconnaissance from orbit. This initiative is deeply rooted in the 'Aatmanirbharta' (self-reliance) policy, which emphasizes reducing dependence on foreign technology for critical security infrastructure. By developing and deploying indigenous satellites and space-based sensors, India is not only enhancing its operational readiness but also securing its strategic autonomy. The integration of space technology allows for better situational awareness in remote, high-altitude, and inaccessible terrains, where traditional patrolling is often constrained by geography and weather conditions. Furthermore, this capability provides a significant advantage in detecting unauthorized movements, infrastructure development by adversaries, and potential security breaches along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) and the Line of Control (LoC).
