US-Iran Peace Negotiations: Geopolitical Implications and India’s Energy Security

For India, the stakes are exceptionally high. As the world’s third-largest consumer of crude oil, India’s energy security is inextricably linked to the stability of West Asia. The normalization of US-Iran relations could pave the way for India to resume significant oil imports from Iran, which were curtailed due to previous sanctions. Furthermore, a stable Iran is essential for India’s strategic investments, such as the Chabahar Port and the International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC), which provide a gateway to Central Asia and Europe, bypassing land-route constraints. However, the path to a final agreement remains fraught with challenges.
