India is currently navigating a significant demographic transition. With the elderly population projected to surge to 23 crore by 2036, the state faces the dual challenge of ensuring social security and providing specialized healthcare for a rapidly aging citizenry. The Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment has prioritized this shift, centering its strategy on the Atal Vayo Abhyuday Yojana (AVYAY), a comprehensive umbrella scheme designed to address the multifaceted needs of senior citizens. AVYAY serves as a critical policy intervention, moving beyond mere financial assistance to encompass geriatric caregiving, institutional support, and robust grievance redressal mechanisms. By integrating these services, the government aims to mitigate the vulnerabilities associated with old age, such as social isolation, lack of access to healthcare, and economic dependency. The upcoming 5th meeting of the National Council for Senior Citizens represents a pivotal institutional effort to foster inter-ministerial coordination and policy refinement.
