Advancing Reformed Multilateralism: India’s Strategic Push at the 81st UNGA

The 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) has once again brought the necessity of 'Reformed Multilateralism' to the forefront of global discourse. India, through its co-chairing of the inaugural P4M Summit, has underscored that the current architecture of international institutions, particularly the UN Security Council (UNSC), is increasingly out of sync with the geopolitical realities of the 21st century. By advocating for a more representative and inclusive global governance structure, India is positioning itself as the voice of the Global South, seeking to rectify the historical imbalances that have marginalized developing nations in decision-making processes. A central pillar of India’s diplomatic outreach at this summit is the '4F' crisis—Fuel, Food, Fertiliser, and Finance. These four interconnected sectors represent the most acute vulnerabilities facing the developing world today. The volatility in global energy markets, coupled with disruptions in food supply chains and the rising cost of essential agricultural inputs like fertilisers, has created a precarious economic environment. Furthermore, the tightening of global financial conditions has exacerbated debt distress in many emerging economies. India’s emphasis on these issues highlights the need for a coordinated international response that prioritizes the developmental needs of the Global South over the narrow interests of established powers.
