The Indian government is currently navigating a complex economic challenge as domestic sugar prices reach record highs. To curb inflationary pressures, policymakers are considering a multi-pronged approach, including the potential implementation of duty-free sugar imports and the imposition of stricter stockholding limits on traders and mills. This move underscores the persistent tension in Indian agricultural policy: the need to protect the purchasing power of the common consumer while simultaneously safeguarding the interests of sugarcane farmers and the domestic sugar industry.
