Bolstering Air Superiority: Strategic Indigenization of Precision Strike Capabilities

The Ministry of Defence has recently formalized a significant procurement contract worth ₹811 crore with Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL) to supply 160 Satellite-aided Smart Anti-Airfield Weapons (SAT-SAAW) to the Indian Air Force. This acquisition marks a pivotal development in India’s ongoing efforts to modernize its aerial strike arsenal while simultaneously reducing reliance on foreign military imports.

The SAT-SAAW is a precision-guided, long-range weapon system specifically designed to neutralize enemy airfield infrastructure, including runways, bunkers, and hardened aircraft shelters. By integrating satellite navigation, these weapons offer high accuracy, allowing the Indian Air Force to conduct surgical strikes with minimal collateral damage. The decision to source these systems from a domestic public sector undertaking like BDL underscores the government's commitment to the 'Aatmanirbhar Bharat' (Self-Reliant India) initiative in the defence sector.
