Bolstering India’s Maritime Edge: Strategic Expansion of the Kochi International Ship Repair Facility

The recent joint venture between Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) and Drydocks World marks a significant milestone in India’s quest to become a global hub for ship repair and maritime logistics. By expanding the International Ship Repair Facility (ISRF) in Kochi, the partnership seeks to integrate advanced global expertise with India’s strategic geographical advantage in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR).

This collaboration is a critical component of India’s broader maritime vision, aimed at reducing the country's dependence on foreign shipyards for maintenance and repair services. Currently, a significant portion of Indian-owned vessels undergoes repairs in international facilities, leading to a substantial outflow of foreign exchange. By enhancing domestic capacity, this project not only promotes the 'Make in India' initiative in the defense and commercial shipping sectors but also creates a robust ecosystem for tertiary sector growth in the coastal economy.
