Centre Allocates ₹2,537 Crore for Flood Management in Northeast India

The Union Ministry of Jal Shakti has recently approved an allocation of ₹2,536.96 crore to bolster flood management and anti-erosion infrastructure across the northeastern states. This financial assistance is being provided under the Flood Management and Border Areas Programme (FMBAP), a critical central intervention designed to address the recurring challenges of flooding and riverbank erosion that plague the Brahmaputra and Barak valley regions. The Northeast region, characterized by its unique topography, high seismic sensitivity, and heavy monsoon rainfall, faces perennial threats from floods that cause significant loss of life, displacement, and damage to critical infrastructure. The FMBAP serves as a vital mechanism for cooperative federalism, where the Union government provides both financial grants and technical expertise to supplement state-led disaster management efforts. By funding 263 specific projects, the initiative aims to strengthen embankments, improve drainage systems, and implement sustainable anti-erosion measures to protect vulnerable communities.
