India and Sri Lanka Strengthen Bilateral Energy Cooperation

In a significant move to deepen regional integration, India and Sri Lanka recently held bilateral discussions in New Delhi to review the progress of critical energy infrastructure projects. The talks underscored the commitment of both nations to enhance energy connectivity, which is viewed as a cornerstone for economic stability and sustainable development in the South Asian region. Central to these discussions was the proposed High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) interconnection. This project is envisioned as a game-changer for regional power trade, allowing for the seamless exchange of electricity between the two nations. By creating a robust transmission link, both countries aim to optimize their power grids, reduce transmission losses, and ensure a more reliable supply of electricity to meet growing industrial and domestic demands. Furthermore, the review included the Sampur Solar Power Project, a key initiative aimed at diversifying Sri Lanka’s energy mix and reducing its reliance on fossil fuels. This project aligns with India’s broader 'Neighbourhood First' policy and its commitment to supporting regional partners in their transition toward renewable energy sources.
