India Launches Dedicated Conservation Action Plan for Clouded Leopard

The Government of India, in collaboration with the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), has launched a dedicated Conservation Action Plan for the clouded leopard (Neofelis nebulosa). This initiative marks a significant step toward protecting one of the most elusive and ecologically vital felids in the Indian subcontinent, primarily found in the dense forests of Northeast India.

The clouded leopard is often referred to as the 'gateway' species for the health of Himalayan and Northeast forest ecosystems. Due to its shy nature and preference for dense, undisturbed canopy cover, it serves as an indicator species for habitat integrity. The new action plan shifts the focus from isolated protected areas to a 'landscape-level' conservation approach. This strategy recognizes that wildlife corridors and forest connectivity are essential for the species' survival, especially in a region characterized by fragmented landscapes and shifting cultivation practices.

A core pillar of this plan is the integration of local communities into the conservation framework.
