Integrating Tradition with Technology: Centre of Excellence for Handloom Technology Inaugurated at IIT Delhi

The Ministry of Textiles has taken a significant step toward the modernization of India’s traditional handloom sector by establishing a Centre of Excellence for Handloom Technology (CoE-HT) at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi. Inaugurated by Union Minister Giriraj Singh, this centre is designed to act as a catalyst for transforming the handloom industry from a traditional craft into a technology-driven, globally competitive sector.

The core objective of the CoE-HT is to integrate India’s rich handloom heritage with cutting-edge research and digital innovation. By leveraging advanced technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), the centre aims to address long-standing challenges in the sector, including loom modernization, design optimization, and supply chain inefficiencies. The centre will serve as a hub for digital knowledge systems, providing weavers and stakeholders with access to modern design tools and market-linked data.

Furthermore, the initiative places a strong emphasis on entrepreneurship by fostering a startup incubation ecosystem. This will encourage young innovators and designers to collaborate with traditional artisans, creating a synergy that can lead to sustainable business models. By focusing on the indigenization of technology, the centre seeks to enhance the productivity and income of weavers while preserving the unique cultural identity of Indian handlooms. This move aligns with the broader government vision of 'Vocal for Local' and 'Atmanirbhar Bharat,' ensuring that the handloom sector remains relevant in the era of Industry 4.0.
