Project Rhino: Scaling Conservation Strategies for the Greater One-Horned Rhinoceros

On the occasion of World Rhino Day 2026, the government announced the launch of 'Project Rhino,' a strategic initiative designed to secure the future of the greater one-horned rhinoceros (Rhinoceros unicornis). While India has achieved remarkable success in rhino conservation, particularly within the protected areas of Assam, the species remains vulnerable due to habitat fragmentation and the risks associated with concentrated populations. Project Rhino seeks to address these challenges by providing comprehensive financial and technical support to states, facilitating a shift from localized conservation to a broader, landscape-level management approach. The initiative is built upon three core pillars: habitat management, genetic improvement, and advanced population dynamics research. By fostering collaboration between the Union and state governments, the project aims to identify and restore suitable habitats in states like Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, which historically supported rhino populations. This expansion is critical for mitigating the risks of disease outbreaks or natural disasters that could potentially devastate a single, concentrated population. Furthermore, the focus on genetic research will ensure the long-term viability of the species by maintaining diversity and preventing inbreeding depression, which is a common concern in isolated wildlife populations.
