Punjab’s Agroforestry Initiative: Leveraging International Cooperation for Ecological Restoration

The Punjab Forest Department has recently proposed a comprehensive ₹760 crore project in strategic collaboration with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). This initiative marks a significant shift in the state’s environmental policy, moving beyond traditional forest management toward a more integrated approach that emphasizes agroforestry and biodiversity conservation. By leveraging international technical and financial expertise, the project aims to address the critical issue of declining green cover in a state primarily dominated by intensive agriculture. At its core, the project seeks to incentivize farmers to adopt agroforestry practices, which can serve as a dual-purpose solution: enhancing the state’s ecological footprint while simultaneously providing farmers with diversified income streams. This is particularly relevant for Punjab, where the monoculture of wheat and paddy has led to soil degradation and a depletion of natural resources. By integrating trees into agricultural landscapes, the state hopes to improve soil health, increase carbon sequestration, and restore local biodiversity that has been lost to rapid urbanization and industrial-scale farming.
