Revitalizing India’s Cotton Sector: Government Focus on Productivity and Branding

The Union Ministry of Textiles has reaffirmed its commitment to transforming India’s cotton sector, a vital pillar of the nation's agricultural and industrial economy. During the 56th Foundation Day celebrations of the Cotton Corporation of India (CCI), Union Textiles Minister Giriraj Singh emphasized the need for a paradigm shift in cotton cultivation to ensure global competitiveness and enhanced farmer prosperity.

Central to this vision is the 'Kapas Kanti' mission, an initiative designed to modernize cotton farming infrastructure and promote sustainable cultivation practices. By focusing on high-yield varieties and climate-resilient farming techniques, the government aims to address the stagnation in productivity that has historically plagued the sector. Furthermore, the 'Kasturi Cotton Bharat' branding project is being scaled up to establish a premium identity for Indian cotton in the international market. This branding initiative is expected to improve traceability, quality assurance, and price realization for farmers, moving the sector away from a commodity-based model toward a value-added, brand-conscious ecosystem.

The cotton sector is critical to India’s socio-economic fabric, supporting millions of farmers and providing the raw material for the massive textile and apparel industry. However, the sector faces persistent challenges, including erratic weather patterns, pest infestations, and fragmented supply chains. The government’s renewed focus seeks to integrate technology and institutional support to mitigate these risks. By strengthening the role of the CCI in procurement and market facilitation, the government intends to provide a robust safety net for farmers while encouraging the adoption of modern agricultural practices. This holistic approach aligns with the broader national goal of doubling farmer incomes and strengthening the 'Make in India' initiative by securing the domestic supply chain for the textile industry.
