Strategic Expansion of Project Cheetah: Diversifying Habitats for Long-term Conservation

The translocation of African cheetahs to the Gandhi Sagar Wildlife Sanctuary in Madhya Pradesh marks a pivotal evolution in India’s flagship species reintroduction initiative. Since the inception of the project, Kuno National Park has served as the primary site for the acclimatization and release of these big cats. However, relying on a single habitat poses significant ecological risks, including potential disease outbreaks, human-wildlife conflict, and the limitations of carrying capacity. By diversifying the geographical footprint of the cheetah population, the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change is adopting a landscape-level approach to conservation. Gandhi Sagar, with its vast grasslands and suitable prey base, offers a secondary sanctuary that reduces the density pressure on Kuno.
