Strengthening Maritime Security: India-Sri Lanka Strategic Engagement under MAHASAGAR Vision

The recent high-level visit by the Raksha Mantri to Sri Lanka marks a significant step in deepening bilateral defense and strategic ties. This engagement is anchored in India’s 'Neighbourhood First' policy, which prioritizes stable and collaborative relations with immediate neighbors to ensure regional security and prosperity. Central to these discussions is the MAHASAGAR (Maritime Awareness and Holistic Growth and Security for All in the Region) vision, which serves as a cornerstone for India’s maritime diplomacy in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR). For India, Sri Lanka is a critical partner in maintaining a secure and rules-based maritime domain. The visit highlights a multi-faceted approach to cooperation, encompassing maritime domain awareness, joint training exercises, and capacity building for the Sri Lankan armed forces. By fostering interoperability and information sharing, both nations aim to mitigate common threats such as maritime piracy, illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing, and the trafficking of narcotics and arms.
