Strengthening Multilateral Scientific Cooperation: The 8th BRICS Working Group on Oceanic and Polar Research

India is currently hosting the eighth meeting of the BRICS Working Group on Oceanic and Polar Science and Technology (OPST) in Goa. This three-day summit serves as a critical platform for member nations to synchronize their research agendas regarding the world’s most challenging frontiers: the deep oceans and the polar regions. As climate change accelerates the melting of ice caps and alters marine ecosystems, the need for a unified scientific approach among emerging economies has become paramount. The deliberations in Goa are centered on fostering robust scientific cooperation, facilitating the exchange of data on ocean exploration, and identifying pathways for joint capacity building. For India, this engagement is strategically significant. By leveraging the collective expertise of BRICS nations, India aims to enhance its indigenous capabilities in deep-sea exploration—a domain currently being prioritized through initiatives like the Deep Ocean Mission. Furthermore, the working group provides a forum to discuss the sustainable management of marine resources and the mitigation of environmental risks associated with polar instability, which has direct implications for global weather patterns and sea-level rise.
