Strengthening South-South Cooperation: India’s Proposal for Unified BRICS Digital Payments and Agrarian Integration

The 2026 BRICS Business Forum has emerged as a critical platform for recalibrating economic cooperation among member nations, with India taking a lead role in proposing structural reforms to enhance trade efficiency. Central to India’s agenda is the development of a unified digital payments system. By reducing reliance on traditional, often costly, and friction-heavy cross-border settlement mechanisms, such a system could significantly lower transaction costs and foster greater financial integration among BRICS economies. This initiative aligns with the broader global trend of de-dollarization and the pursuit of sovereign digital financial infrastructure. Beyond financial connectivity, the forum addressed the imperative of food security and sustainable agricultural practices through the proposed BRICS AGRIN network. This initiative aims to create a collaborative framework for sharing agricultural technology, research, and best practices. Given that many BRICS nations are agrarian-heavy economies, the AGRIN network could serve as a vital conduit for technology transfer, climate-resilient farming techniques, and supply chain optimization. By pooling technical resources, member states can better address the challenges of food inflation and climate-induced agricultural volatility.
