Transitioning from Technology Adoption to Indigenous Innovation: Challenges and Strategic Imperatives

India’s technological trajectory is undergoing a fundamental transformation, characterized by a transition from being a passive adopter of foreign technology to an active architect of indigenous innovation. Recent breakthroughs in high-end sectors—such as Gallium Nitride (GaN) semiconductors, advanced CAR-T cell therapies for oncology, and the rapid expansion of the private space sector—underscore this maturation. These developments signify that India is successfully leveraging its demographic dividend and scientific talent to build a self-reliant 'Atmanirbhar' technology ecosystem. Despite these successes, the path to becoming a global innovation hub remains fraught with structural bottlenecks. A critical concern is the persistent underinvestment in Research and Development (R&D). While the government has initiated various schemes to incentivize innovation, the Gross Expenditure on R&D (GERD) as a percentage of GDP remains significantly lower than that of global leaders like the U.S., China, or South Korea. Furthermore, there exists a pronounced 'commercialization gap'—the 'valley of death' where promising laboratory-scale research fails to transition into scalable, market-ready products. This is often attributed to a disconnect between academic research, industry requirements, and the availability of venture capital for deep-tech startups.
